The body of Colllin Backowski, 25, from Colorado, was found on Sunday after he buried alive for more than half a day in a collapsed tunnel on Mount Hood in Oregon. Rescue crews resumed the search early Sunday morning for the snowboarder struck by ice the

A SNOWBOARDER is believed to have died after he was trapped under a slab of ice the size of a school bus.

Collin Backowski, 25, was buried under the giant piece of ice after a tunnel collapsed on top of him on Mount Hood in the US state of Oregon, according to Oregon Live.

Mr Backowski is said to have been searching for a place to snowboard with five other men in their 20s, who all survived the collapse - although two were injured by debris.

Searchers were attempting to clear the ice tunnel, at an elevation of about 2.5 kilometres, with hand tools.

"This is clearly not a good-looking situation when it comes to survivability," said Sergeant Pete Hughes, a spokesman for the Hood River County Sheriff's Office.
