Black jellyfish with 30-foot tentacles attack California surf swimmers
The many joys of Southe Califoia beaches have been celebrated in pop culture for decades, but the Beach Boys failed to wa surf fans about stinging black jellyfish that can sprout tentacles up to 30 feet long. Last week at idyllic Laguna Beach, swimmers reportedly emerged from the water covered in stings and with membranes affixed to their flesh after the rare jellyfish came apart in the waves.
The black jellyfish was identified only as recently as 1999, and this would mark the species' first appearance on SoCal shores. Experts believe that warmer sea temperatures may have lured the creatures in as they search for food. [Source]
