2 Men Deshawn Derr and David Ramsey Charged in Craigslist Armed Robberies
FAIRFAX, Va. - You could call them the Craigslist cell phone bandits. Two men were arrested in Fairfax County, accused of using iPhones as bait to rob as many as a dozen people at gunpoint across the Washington area over the past three months.
Fairfax County Police say they arrested the men after an armed robbery last Friday night in a KFC parking lot in Annandale around 11 p.m. The victim got a look at the license plate on their getaway car and police took it from there.
Fairfax County Police say the accused were placing ads to sell iPhones on Craigslist and then robbing prospective buyers at gunpoint.
Deshawn Derr, 25, and David Ramsey, 39, were not offering to sell just one, but many phones, according to police spokesman Lucy Caldwell.
"Some people want to purchase multiple items - whether it's iPhones or bicycles or anything else - so they can resell them," Caldwell said.
In this case, the phones supposedly for sale were advertised as "jailbroken."
"Any restrictions that the iPhone may have, jailbreaking it will let you do whatever you want,” explained iPhone owner and Craigslist user Sheldon Croft.
