A 44-year-old woman who has been pulled over six times for DUI charges was sentenced to life in prison by a Texas court yesterday.

When Rose Ann Davidson was arrested for driving erratically last July, she had only recently been released from prison for a DUI charge.

The San Marcos woman, who had an open can of beer with her when she was pulled over, has a record for DUI going back to 1996.

At Hays County court on Wednesday, the jury heard that she had served time in prison for other alcohol-related charges.

Texas has strict drink driving laws, with a first offense leading to a $2,000 fine and up to 180 days in prison.

In the Lone Star State it is illegal to drive with 0.08 per cent blood alcohol level, and repeat offenders find themselves subject to progressively harsher fines and sentences.

As well as jail time, drivers have their licenses revoked for lengthy periods.

Davidson had just been released from prison after her fifth DUI charge when she was arrested last year.
