TEXAS CITY, Texas -- A former public servant has been accused of impersonating a current police officer.

Texas City police said Anthony Wayne Collins, 51, told a 28-year-old woman he was a police officer when he tried to touch her inappropriately.

"There was no indication until he reached over and touched her and that started, 'You don't have a right to do this,' and he indicated he was an officer," Capt. Brian Goetschius said.

Investigators said he even flashed a badge.

Goetschius said that badge was issued by the League City Police Department, but Collins has not worked there since 2004. Records showed Collins was a code enforcement officer before he was terminated.

Detectives said the woman got into Collins' vehicle willingly outside a lounge on Robertson Street about 2 a.m. Thursday. She called 911 after Collins tried to touch her and pass himself off as an officer, investigators said.

"She couldn't see exactly the writing on it or decipher what kind of badge it was other than him saying, 'I am a police officer,'" Goetschius said.

Goetschius said investigators are worried that Collins may have tried the same thing before.

"If there are victims where he touched them and indicated he was a police officer, we would want them to come forward and report that," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Texas City police at 409-945-TIPS.
