Teacher, 30, suspended after revealing she used to be a stripper and prostitute

A 30-year-old woman has been suspended from teaching after she revealed her former life as a stripper and prostitute.

Melissa Petro, who eas $61,000 a year (£38,500) teaching art in a New York school, went public about her sexcapades.

Calling herself a 'former sex worker', she posted online accounts of her adventures in Mexico and London.

The video posted online last October shows Petro reading an anthology describing her experience working as a stripper in Mexico when she was 19.

'I did it for the money but it was also true that I enjoyed it,' she explains in the video.

She also compares her teaching career to having sex with her boyfriend.

In addition, Petro wrote on U.S. website the Huffington Post last month: 'From October 2006 to January 2007, I accepted money in exchange for sexual services I provided to men I met online in what was then called the "erotic services" section of Craigslist.org.'

The attached biography identifies Petro, who has an MFA in creative non-fiction from The New School, as a 'former sex worker, researcher, writer, educator, and feminist'.

Principal at Board of Education of New York City,  Kerry Castellano, referred questions to the Department of Education's press office, which said Petro had been reassigned to administrative duties pending an investigation.

Petro, who teaches at Public School 70 in the Bronx, revealed that a co-worker had waed her that some of her colleagues were beginning to Google her.

'There have been lots of rumours going around about her for a while now. I wouldn't want my kid to be in a school where she is,' said one school worker.

The Department of Education said the case has been referred to the head of the Office of Special Investigations, Richard Condon.
