The ordeal began early Friday as the sisters, also of Chula Vista, were traveling down the interstate together after dropping off a friend, according to their cousin Jessica Gutierrez.
They were headed south on the slippery roadway when their truck spun out of control and hit a barrier before overtuing, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The truck landed on its wheels and was stalled in the fast lane, blocking traffic.
The sisters then exited near the passenger side, giving each other a hug - and seconds later, the oncoming sedan drove up and crashed into the truck before striking them, according to NBC.
Gutierrez recounted the incident in a gofundme post and said after her cousins had gotten out of the car to comfort each other, thinking they had both survived the accident.

The Moreno sisters, who family members described as best friends and the only children of their parents, both died at the scene, NBC reported.
Califoia Highway Patrol investigators said the driver of the sedan stayed at the scene.
Following the incident, southbound lanes were blocked during the investigation and the interstate was cleared by 5am.
