'Multiple victims' in shooting at family planning centre in Colorado Springs
Police in Colorado Springs are responding to a call of an ‘active shooter’ at a family planning centre.
The gunman has shot multiple victims including four police officers and barricaded himself inside the Planned Parenthood facility, according to the Colorado Frateal Order of Police executive director, Mike Violette.
The condition of those injured is not yet known, but nine people have been taken to area hospitals. It isn’t known if that includes the officers.
Initial reports that a police officer had been killed were later reported to be unconfirmed. Police have instructed employees at the restaurant next to the building, Jun Jun Japanese, to stay indoors and out of sight.
‘We still have a gunman that is out there,’ Lieutenant Catherine Buckley told the Denver Post.
There are roughly a dozen police vehicles at the scene. One early report suggested that the gunman was standing in the car park and shooting at passing motorists near the intersection of Centennial Boulevard and West Fillmore Street.
Planned Parenthood has been under scrutiny since an edited video suggested the organisation was selling foetal tissue. The charges were found to have no grounds but anti-abortion campaigners and some lawmakers have called for the facility to have its funding cut off.
The shooter is described as wearing a long coat and a hunting-type hat, RT reports.
