AURORA, Colo. -- One man was killed, and his female passenger injured, when their car careened off the road, through a park and into a creek early Sunday moing, Aurora police Lt. Chuck DeShazer said.

At about 2 a.m., Aurora police and firefighters were called to the intersection of South Laredo Street and East Dartmouth Avenue on reports of a SUV in a creek. When they arrived, they found the driver, 23-year-old Tyrel Kinard, and a passenger, 23-year-old Endina Cardenas, trapped inside a Dodge Durango in the creek that runs through Meadowood Park.

DeShazer said emergency crews extricated both victims. Kinard was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. Cardenas was airlifted to Swedish Hospital with serious injuries.

Based on their investigation, police believed Kinard was driving the Durango east on Dartmouth at a high rate of speed when he veered off the right side of the road. The SUV struck two trees before launching into the air and landing in the creek.

Investigators believed both speed and alcohol may have been to blame for the wreck, DeShazer said.

Aurora Water also responded to clean up fluids leaking from the vehicle into the creek.
