Bicyclist Ralph Finneren Killed after Colliding with Car in Orion Township
ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Ralph Finneren loved to stay in shape. The 57-year-old GM retiree was riding his Trek bicycle northbound on Giddings Road last Wednesday afteoon. That's when a 28-year-old driver of a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am heading to work at GM's Orion Plant hit him causing fatal injuries.
"Obviously, it's still under investigation, but it appears to be an accident. No alcohol preliminarily that looks to be involved. Just a terrible, tragic accident," said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
The driver of the Grand Am was also heading north on Giddings. He tells Oakland County Sheriff's deputies he didn't even see the bicyclist.
Cars and bikes sharing the road present dangers and the need for extra caution, especially in warm weather.
"Just be much more aware. There (are) more people, more bikes in and around the roadway. Be cautious. You're going to have to live with this for the rest of your life," Bouchard said.
Cyclists must also be especially aware.
"To anybody that's riding a bicycle or motorcycle or … anticipating walking next to or on the side of a road, try to wear attire that is reflective or obvious and something that doesn't blend," Bouchard told FOX 2's Bill Gallagher.
In a phone interview, Finneren's wife described him as a loving and dedicated husband and father.
