Almost a quarter of our children endured a life of poverty in 2011
According to figures gathered by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the number of children in America living in poverty increased to 23 percent in 2011. The impact of the recession was felt especially hard in the country's southwest. The Kids Count Survey showed children were worst off in New Mexico, where nearly 40 percent of parents were without secure employment and 30 percent of children lived below the poverty line.
According to Kim Posich, of the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty, much of the suffering was due to services being cut at a time when they were needed most. "All those systems have been strained beyond the max," she said. [Source]
