Official: Six dead in Chattanooga bus crash

CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Chattanooga Fire Department has confirmed multiple fatalities in a horrific school bus crash in Chattanooga with one official saying the death toll includes at least six.

Hamilton County District Attoey Neal Pinkston reported 23 patients have been taken to the hospital and confirmed six deaths.

 “There was a bus, a school bus traveling from Woodmore Elementary School,” said Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher. “There were, we believe, 35 children on that school bus, ranging from Kindergarten to fifth grade. It was a single vehicles crash.”

The Chattanooga Fire Department was able to rescue all surviving children from the bus after two hours of efforts.

"We just wanted to inform you that Hamilton County schools faced a great tragedy today. School and county personnel are on scene of a bus accident on Tally Road in Chattanooga.  Extra counselors and support staff will be on hand to help students process this horrible incident," a message said that was sent to Hamilton County, TN parents, according to the Times Free Press.

The police department said the bus driver is cooperating in the investigation.
