COOK COUNTY, Ga. — Cook County Sheriff’s Office say a school resource officer died on Monday after suffering a heart attack from breaking up a fight.

According to the police incident report, Capt. Terry Arnold suffered an apparent fatal heart attack after a fight between two students at Cook County High School.

Officials said Arnold, along with school administration, took a teen involved in the fight into custody and was exiting the main entrance of the school when he collapsed.

Arnold, who was affectionately known as “turtle,” was taken to South Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, the post says.

“Captain Arnold loved and was loved by Cook County and the entire South Georgia community,” officials say.

Medical personnel immediately provided aid until emergency medical services arrived. Arnold was transported to South Georgia Medical Center where he died a short time later, officials said.

Arnold, a 26-year veteran with the CCSO, served in various roles throughout the course of his career, including being supervisor and director of the School Resource Officers Division for the Sheriff’s Office and the Cook County School System.

He had previously served the City of Adel and City of Remerton police departments.

Arnold is survived by his son, four daughters, and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be released soon, according to the CCSO.
